FSSAI revised its licensing rules with effect from 1 April 2026. If you are relying on older advice, your category or renewal information may be out of date.
The revised turnover limits
| Category | Annual turnover | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | Up to ₹1.5 crore | Form A |
| State licence | Above ₹1.5 crore, up to ₹50 crore | Form B |
| Central licence | Above ₹50 crore | Form B |
The previous limits were ₹12 lakh for registration and ₹20 crore for a State licence. As a result, many restaurants that once needed a State licence may now fall under registration.
Turnover isn't the only factor
Certain activities can require a Central licence regardless of turnover. Examples include import and export, operating across several states and running your own e-commerce food platform. Check your activities as well as your revenue before you apply.
Licences no longer expire in the old way
Licences and registrations issued on or after 1 April 2026 have perpetual validity. They stay valid unless suspended, cancelled or surrendered, so no renewal is required. Fees can be paid for any number of years. If you hold an older fixed-term licence, check its expiry and migration position, as renewal may still apply until then.
